General Usage
Traditionally Bixa orellana apart from being a popular condiment is also used as a laxative, cardiotonic, hypotensive, expectorant, and an antibiotic. Annatto also has anti-inflammatory effect on bruises and wounds. In Ayurveda, it has also been prescribed for the treatment of bronchitis and for healing wounds. In food industry also, Annatto is extensively used as a natural food colorant/ food dye.
Overview
Bixa orellana (family Bixaceae), commonly known as Annatto is a neotropical perennial tree and has great agro-industrial value because of its seeds. The seeds have high carotenoid content. Primarily used as a colorant and spice, the seeds of Annatto are also used for healing purposes. It is widely used in pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and cosmeceutical industries.
