Miswak has become synonymous with the traditional teeth-cleansing chewing stick that is prepared from the stem of Salvadora persica. Miswak also has antioxidant, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effects. It also has gingival & periodontal health effects. Across the Middle East and India, Miswak is extensively used as a ‘tooth-cleaning stick’.
Overview
Salvadora persica is a large, well-branched, and evergreen shrub or a tree found in dry and arid region of India. The stem of S. persica has antiplaque, analgesic, anticonvulsant, antibacterial, antimycotic properties. There are numerous beneficial effects of miswak in respect of oral hygiene and dental health.
