Withania somnifera, also known as ashwagandha, is one of the prominent medicinal plants in Ayurveda. The roots of ashwagandha have been used for millennia as a Rasayana for its wide-ranging health benefits. The root is regarded as tonic, aphrodisiac, narcotic, diuretic, anthelmintic, astringent, thermogenic, and stimulant. It exhibits anti-inflammatory, antitumor, neuroprotective, antimicrobial, antistress, antidiabetic, and cardioprotective. Studies are ongoing to test its effect on neurodegenerative diseases.
